Description
The Biobank of the Laboratory of Human Genetics (IGG-GB) was established in May 2020 following the merging of two longstanding biobanks located in Genoa: the "Cell Lines and DNA Biobank from Patients Affected by Genetic Diseases" at IRCCS Istituto G. Gaslini (founded in 1976) and the "Galliera Genetic Biobank" at E.O. Ospedali Galliera (founded in 1983, transferred to Gaslini Hospital in 2019). Both Biobanks were set up at laboratories engaged in diagnosis and research of genetic diseases, including rare ones, and have made full use of the interrelated laboratory activities to collect well-documented samples and associated data. Since 1993, they have served as core facilities supported by the Telethon Foundation, thus has allowed the organisation of sample-related data in dedicated databases and the launch of online sample catalogues. A significant milestone occurred in 2007 when both biobanks became founding members of the Telethon Network of Genetic Biobanks (TNGB), subsequently partnering with Eurobiobank and joining the Italian node of BBMRI-ERIC in 2014. Locally, the biobanks were officially recognized by the Liguria Region in 2010. Presently, the unified biobank manages over 19000 samples (cell lines, serum, plasma, PBMC, urine, CSF and DNA samples) representing 300 distinct genetic defects. The Biobank operates in accordance with current regulations and its quality system has been certified under ISO 9001:2015 and SIGUcert standards since 2011.
